Personal Goal Statement
I've always been interested in both helping others and learning all that I can about biology, so choosing a career in the medical field was a natural choice. I am a hard worker and a fastidious learner, both qualities I feel will help me achieve my goal of becoming a nurse. By taking the Licensed Practical Nurse course at NorQuest College and applying myself, I hope to learn the necessary skills to eventually work in a hospital setting and make a positive impact in the community through my career.
Personal Philosophy of Nursing
I believe that first impressions are important, and this is true even in the medical field. If a patient is treated with compassion from the point of primary care and onward, chances are they will not feel hesitant to seek medical attention in the future, or speak up about their needs while under care. This can lead to improved communication between the patient and medical professionals, improved recovery times, and better overall health for the patient. Communication is important within the medical community as well, from something as small as a friendly exchange between coworkers to something as grand as a collaboration that leads to a major medical breakthrough or a new cure. Communication shows that you care, and are invested in whatever you are involved in, something I look forward to showing as a nurse. It is for this reason that I believe that nursing is far more than just applying medical know-how.
Standards of Practice
The Standards of Practice are excellent criteria for providing the best possible patient care. Not only do they outline appropriate work ethic, but also ensure that practices are kept current thanks to the collective critical thinking the Standards of Practice encourages among nurses. The medical field is very much an ever-evolving thing, so it is only fitting that anyone wishing to take up a career in such a field must commit to continual learning and self-assessment to remain at the top of one's game. This meshes quite well with my own views, as even prior to taking the LPN course at NorQuest I sought to learn something new and better myself daily while remaining compassionate and open minded.
Personal and Professional Values
I believe that working together and completing a common goal is far more important than completing something individually for personal gain. Likewise, communication is key in collaborations, as only through proper communication can the needs and wants of all individuals involved be assessed and met by the group. Compassion and understanding are required for communication to be successful, so I strive to keep an open mind. I know that everyone comes from a different walk of life, and so no two viewpoints will be the same. Both my values and philosophy focus on the importance of communication in nursing, as without it nursing would not be nearly as effective.
